What does online speech therapy look like for kids?

How it works
  • Babies and toddlers

Online speech therapy looks a lot like play. You and your child will sit together in your natural environment using their own toys, while your speech therapist provides in-the-moment coaching and guides you through the screen.

  • Preschool and school age

Sessions may look like playing games on the screen, video activities, or home-based scavenger hunts and activities to target their specific speech goals.

  • Older kids and teens

As clients get older, we want to include them in the process for determining what to work on based on what is important to them and how they want to structure our sessions together.

Every 30-minute session includes

Between sessions, you will be assigned simple activities and tasks that you can easily fit into your schedule at home, whether that is in the car on the way to soccer practice, during meal times, or play activities.

  • Checking in on how things are going at home
  • Coaching and education for using strategies at home
  • Progress updates

Does it work by video?

What the research says

Studies have found video speech therapy can work about as well as in-person therapy for many needs. It works best when a parent takes part with young kids.

Kids seen by video made gains similar to kids seen in person on most measures.

A 2017 review of studies on school-age children (Wales and colleagues, 2017). ASHA holds video therapy to the same standards as in-person care (ASHA).

Working with other services

Can we use this alongside school or state services?

School speech therapy

If your child is receiving school-based speech therapy services, they are still able to receive services from our private practice. With a release of information form, we can coordinate with your child's school based therapist.

How it works

Under 3 and state programs

For kids under 3 years old, they may qualify for your state's early intervention program, and it is important to find out if they are eligible to receive additional services from a private practice.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If you, your pediatrician or a teacher is worried about how your child eats, talks, understands, or plays with other kids, we recommend a full speech therapy evaluation to complete testing, observations and review your concerns with a licensed speech therapist.

What age can my child start?

There's no minimum age for speech therapy. We can see babies and toddlers for early communication skills and feeding skills, and kids up to 17 for any other speech, language, communication or feeding concerns.

Do I have to be in every session?

As the parent, caregiver or guardian, you are a big part of how and why this works. The goal of virtual therapy is to work closely with a licensed speech therapist and to gain the knowledge and education to support your child at home.

Can my child get school speech therapy and work with a private practice SLP?

Yes! Children who receive school based services are still eligible and can qualify to receive private speech therapy services in addition to school services. Upon signing a release of information form, we can communicate with your child's school based therapist and coordinate care on what is being worked on in both settings to further support your child.
