Speech therapy in Austin

How speech therapy works in Austin

Austin's school district lines don't follow the city's, so the right first step depends on your child's age and your exact address.

The downtown Austin skyline above Lady Bird Lake

For children under 3, Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) in Travis County includes Easterseals Central Texas, which works with families at home, in child care and in the community. The Texas HHS program search shows the program for your address. From age 3, school evaluations come from your public school district. Austin ISD covers only about half of the city by area. Del Valle, Round Rock, Leander, Manor, Eanes and Pflugerville ISDs each serve parts of Austin, so neighbors can end up in different districts. In Austin ISD, you can ask your campus administrator or Child Study Team chair for an evaluation.

For in-person care, the UT Austin Speech and Hearing Center sees children and adults in English and Spanish, with fees on a sliding scale, and Dell Children's offers outpatient speech and feeding therapy for children at several locations around Austin. Private clinics across the city see clients in person too.

Online therapy is one more option. Sessions happen by video from home or work, so a 30-minute session doesn't turn into an hour on I-35 or MoPac. If you move from South Austin to Round Rock, you keep the same therapist, as long as you're in Texas for each session.

How do I ask Austin ISD for a speech evaluation?

Only for school services. Your address sets your school district, and that district handles any school evaluation. Online sessions with us work the same anywhere in Texas.
