Speech therapy in Houston
How speech therapy works in Houston
Houston is big enough that the right first step depends on your child's age and your address, and sometimes on which side of a highway you live on.
For children under 3, Harris County has several Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) programs, including Easter Seals of Greater Houston, and the Texas HHS program search shows which one serves your address. From age 3, school evaluations come from your public school district. Most of the city is in Houston ISD, but parts of Houston are in other districts, such as Alief ISD in the southwest and Spring Branch ISD in the west. If your child is enrolled in a Houston ISD school, the campus starts the process. Children in private school or not yet enrolled go through the district's Child Find office.
For in-person care, the University of Houston Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic sees infants, children and adults, with reduced fees for those who qualify, and Texas Children's Hospital offers outpatient speech therapy for children at the Medical Center and at locations from Katy to Clear Lake. Private clinics across the city see clients in person too.
Online therapy is one more option. Sessions happen by video from home or work, so a 30-minute session doesn't turn into an afternoon on the 610 Loop or I-45. If you move across the metro area, you keep the same therapist, as long as you're in Texas for each session.
