Speech therapy in Dallas
How speech therapy works in Dallas
Dallas is one of Talking Jay Speech Therapy's two roots, and it is where our clinician trained: Whitney Silverthorn earned her master's degree in speech-language pathology at UT Dallas.
The city is large and spread out, so the right first step depends on your child's age and your address. Dallas County has more than one Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program for children under 3, and the Texas HHS program search tells you which one serves your address. From age 3, school evaluations come from your public school district. Most of the city is in Dallas ISD, but parts of Dallas are in Richardson ISD, Garland ISD and Highland Park ISD, so neighbors can end up in different districts. The UT Dallas Callier Center sees children and adults at its Dallas location on Inwood Road and on the Richardson campus, Children's Health offers outpatient therapy for children, and private clinics across the city see clients in person.
Online therapy is one more option. Sessions happen by video from home or work, so a 30-minute session doesn't turn into an hour on Central Expressway or LBJ. If you move across the Metroplex, you keep the same therapist, as long as you're in Texas for each session.

Questions
Questions from Dallas families
Still wondering about something? A free 15-minute call is a good place to ask.
Do you have an office in Dallas?
No. Every session is online by video, so you join from home or work anywhere in Dallas. If the evaluation shows a need that should be seen in person, we'll help you find care nearby.
How do I find the right ECI program in Dallas?
Dallas County has more than one ECI program. Use the Texas HHS ECI program search with your city or ZIP code to find the one for your address. Anyone can make a referral, including parents, and the evaluation is free.
How do I ask Dallas ISD for a speech evaluation?
If your child attends a Dallas ISD school, send a written request to the campus principal asking for a special education evaluation. If your child isn't enrolled, use the district's Child Find intake. The evaluation is free.
We live in Dallas, but our school district is Richardson ISD. Does that matter?
Only for school services. Your address sets your school district, and that district handles any school evaluation. Online sessions with us work the same anywhere in Texas.
Can my child get speech therapy at school and see you too?
Yes. School services and private therapy can run side by side. With your permission, we can share goals with your child's school speech therapist so everyone works on the same things.
What if my child or I need in-person therapy?
Some needs, like swallowing safety, should be seen in person. Dallas has university and hospital programs, including the UT Dallas Callier Center and Children's Health, plus private clinics. If the evaluation shows that, we'll tell you and help you find the right place.
