About Talking Jay Speech Therapy

Talking Jay Speech Therapy is an online speech therapy practice based in Lubbock, Texas, founded by speech-language pathologist Whitney Silverthorn. Every session is one on one with a licensed speech-language pathologist by video. We see primarily pediatric clients, but we see adults, too. Our prices are on this site, and you can pay for one visit at a time.

Our name

Why "Talking Jay"?

Blue jays are loud, chatty birds with a lot of different calls. We are passionate about communication and supporting others to be able to communicate their wants, needs, thoughts and ideas.

J is also a family name, near and dear to our heart. Put the two together and you get "Talking Jay." The blue jay in our logo is a nod to both of these.

Our approach

How we work

  • Therapy should fit into your week.

No drive, no waiting room. Your child works on their goals at home, in their natural environment and with the people they interact with the most.

  • You're part of it.

Progress happens during our sessions when working closely together, and in between our sessions with practicing strategies on your own, so each session ends with something simple to try at home.

  • Prices are on the website.

You won't be asked to buy a package, and you'll pay for each session before it happens.

  • We'll tell you if we're not the right fit.

If you have concerns about whether or not telehealth is right for you and your family, let's talk about it together and see if it could be a good fit! If you decide that telehealth is not for you, that is okay! We can help you find someone else who can support you.

How do I get started?

You can book your evaluation online through our website and client portal. If you have questions first, you can schedule a free 15-minute consultation. The consultation is a short phone call to talk through your concerns and see if we are a good fit. The evaluation is a 1-hour video session that gives us a full picture of your needs and a plan for therapy.

What are Whitney's credentials?

Whitney Silverthorn is a licensed speech-language pathologist certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). She has worked in outpatient clinics, home health, and telehealth with children from birth to 21, and with adults with a variety of needs. Read Whitney's full bio

Is teletherapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Research shows that speech therapy by video leads to results similar to in-person therapy for many children and adults. Because sessions happen at home, the skills your child practices carry over into everyday life. Read the study: in-person and telepractice outcomes compared (Musaji et al., 2021)

Where are you located?

We are based in Lubbock, Texas, and every session is virtual. Whitney is licensed in Texas, Arizona, and Virginia. Right now we are accepting patients in Texas, and you must be physically located in Texas during each session.
