You will meet with your speech therapist by video, learn strategies for fluent speech production and practice real-life scenarios such as phone calls, meetings, or interviews. Online sessions
What therapy looks like
-
What happens in a session?
Your therapist helps you understand your own stuttering and collaborate on strategies to increase your fluency and confidence in conversations. In sessions, we can work on avoiding less and identifying emotional events that trigger disfluency.
So much work happens on video now that online therapy just fits naturally. We can practice real-life scenarios together: a phone call, a meeting intro, ordering at a restaurant, or a mock interview.
-
What do I do between sessions?
Between sessions, you practice in real situations, starting with easier ones and working up. Your therapist helps you plan something specific for the week, like making one phone call or speaking up once in a meeting.
If you'd like, a partner or family member can join a session to learn how to support you.
-
How is progress tracked?
At the evaluation, we look at how often you stutter, how much effort it takes, how you feel about talking, and which situations matter most to you. We set goals together, track them in our sessions and go over them regularly. Stuttering changes from day to day, so we will always focus on your current concerns.

What does adult stuttering therapy work on?
Adult therapy usually blends a few areas, chosen with you:
| Area | What it can look like |
|---|---|
| Fluency strategies | Ways to ease into speech production, use breath support to increase fluency, and what to do when you get stuck |
| Less avoidance | Using the words you want, making the call, speaking up in the meeting |
| Thoughts and feelings | Talking openly about stuttering, and increasing confidence in speaking situations |
| Real situations | Practicing introductions, phone calls, interviews, presentations and any real-life scenarios |
Stuttering is more than the stuck moments. How you feel about talking, and what you avoid, matter too. That’s why the evaluation asks about all of it.
Why do I stutter?
Stuttering isn’t caused by nerves, personality or anything you did wrong. According to the NIDCD, research points to differences in how the brain handles speech, and stuttering can also be related to family history and genetics.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Still wondering about something? A free 15-minute call is a good place to ask.
Can stuttering be cured in adults?
While there is no cure for stuttering, therapy can be helpful for individuals who are looking for support with speaking in different situations. We can focus on avoiding less and feeling more confident in communication.
I had speech therapy as a kid. Will this be different?
Adult therapy is built around your goals and the situations that matter to you now. A lot of adults also work on avoiding less and worrying less, which may not have been part of therapy as a kid.
Does stuttering therapy work over video?
For many adults, yes. You practice the situations you face every day, like calls and video meetings, without a commute.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals. We'll talk through a recommended schedule after the evaluation, and you book sessions one at a time with no package.
Is there support outside of therapy?
Yes. Self-help and support groups connect people who stutter. The Stuttering Foundation and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders list resources for adults.
